The quality of your bone can have a big impact on your mobility, independence, quality of life, and even your longevity. Studies show that the 1-year mortality rate after a hip fracture for patients over age 60 is 20-30%. This means that up to 1 out of 3 adults die within 1 year after suffering a hip fracture! Another large percentage experience a significant decline in their quality of life. For the above reasons, it is never too early to take steps, including hormone therapy for osteoporosis, to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis.
Your bone undergoes repair throughout your life in a process known as bone remodeling. This process involves removing old and damaged bone and replacing it with new bone. With age, the normal bone remodeling process is impaired, and new bone formation does not keep up with bone removal. The overall effect is bone loss and weaker, more brittle bone. Osteopenia and osteoporosis occur when bone loss becomes severe enough to increase risk of fractures.
Osteopenia is a condition where the bone mineral density (BMD) is 10-25% lower compared to that of a healthy 30 year old. This is usually reported as having a T score -1 to -2.5.
Osteoporosis is defined as having bone mineral density (BMD) that is > 25% lower compared to that of a healthy 30 year old. This is usually reported as having a T score > -2.5. Both conditions are associated with weaker bone and an increased risk of fractures.
Bone density testing is recommended for all women at age 60. Earlier testing is recommended if you are at higher risk. Our anti-aging hormone doctor will discuss whether you are a good candidate for hormone therapy for osteoporosis based on your bone density test results.
Many women with osteoporosis are given drugs to slow down their bone loss. However, these drugs also make their bone stiffer and weaker at the same time. Our functional medicine doctor emphasizes the use of hormone therapy for osteoporosis, since bone loss in women is usually associated with the decline of hormones with menopause. HRT for osteoporosis must be given in the right doses and formulations to impact your bone health. For this reason, it is important to work with a hormone specialist who can do complete hormone lab testing as well as prescribe precise doses of HRT for osteoporosis for you.
